One of the big changes of simplifying and minimizing our “stuff”, is the impact of the visual esthetic of the space. You start to realize that when everything has a placed in your home, you want it to be beautiful. For example, when you build your wardrobe, you are going for quality over quantity. And when we moved into our new home, I knew that our spice cabinet organization was going to be one of my first projects. Because frankly, I was tired of it looking like this…
Now of course this is not necessary in order to have a functional kitchen, but for me, it was a small project to get me excited about our new space. The cabinet was pretty organized nothing was falling out when opening the doors, but it still just felt cluttered to be with all the different packaging. Plus, I love to cook for our family and it now brings me so much joy to open this cabinet daily. Totally guilty of lingering here a bit longer these days. LOL!
Picking the right container…
When choosing the right container for everything I knew it needed to be clear, air sealed and come in different sizes. I also wanted a wide opening for measuring spoons because I NEVER use the sprinkle hole cap thingy. LOL!
- small for the spices
- medium for things that we have bigger qualities of or longer in length such as cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans and bay leaves.
- large for items we have in bulk such as kosher salt and peppercorns
I found them all on Amazon and it shipped to me right away. I love the glass and wood look. It is neutral, timeless and with go with any kitchen we move into next.
Finding the perfect label…
There are so many options for labeling your jars and containers. I could have just used my label maker and they would have still been great. But I wanted something a bit more sophisticated with clean, simple lines.
So I found these on Etsy and fell in LOVE! There are so many options for the labels in this shop. You can even create custom ones in different sizes for different containers. One thing to look for in any labels that you will be using with food is to make sure they are durable and water resistant. These are definitely both.
Putting it all together…
I like to organize spices by like groups instead of doing it alphabetically. For some reason my brain just works better that way and I know that depending on what I am making, I know the area I’m going to be reaching for things. There were additionally a couple items that we already had on hand that were key for our spice cabinet organization. If you only invest in two things when organizing in a kitchen or pantry, let it be tiered shelves and lazy susans! They are soooooooooo helpful and let you see/get to everything in the cabinet.
And that’s it folks! I am so happy with how it turned out and when we move out of our rental, I know it will transfer well to wherever we end up. Happy organizing!!

Callie
